About 94% of 100 health system executives surveyed described the severity of the nursing shortage in their health systems as “critical,” and part of that may be because health systems aren’t delivering on what nurses want: flexibility.
The 2023 Healthcare Executive Report revealed that 80% of younger nurses requested more flexible scheduling, yet only 11% of health system executives surveyed offered more flexible schedules. In addition, 41% of travel nurses surveyed for a Job Satisfaction Index report said they would never return to a staff position because they preferred freedom and flexibility.
